Find your way around with MirrorMap, it's almost as cool as time travel

(CBS) - If you've ever been lost, you know how valuable it would be to predict the next best move. But how can you do such a thing if you're - duh - lost, and you don't know what you'd see and where you'd end up if you go a particular direction?

Now imagine if there was a way to do just that? An app to show you where you're going before you get there? That's almost as neat as time travel!

NewScientist reports, "That's the thinking behind MirrorMap, an augmented reality system." The technology has been developed by Carmen Au and colleagues at McGill University in Montreal, Canada. It was presented at the Mobile HCI conference in Stockholm, Sweden last week, and we happen to think it's pretty darn cool.

Check out the video above to see how it works...

"Hold up a smartphone running the MirrorMap app and you'll see video feeds from CCTV cameras in the area appear as 'virtual mirrors' hanging in space," NewScientist explains. But there is a snag: getting access to those live camera feeds.

So we don't know if this service will ever become a reality, but for finding-our-way's sake, we kind of hope it does. But then again, what if one of these feeds accidentally catches you picking a wedgie or something? Or, if people use it for evil rather than for good? This could get creepily scary.
