Devils Stop Senators 1-0

Martin Brodeur stopped 21 shots for his fifth shutout of the season as the New Jersey Devils beat the Ottawa Senators 1-0 Monday night.

It was the eighth time this season Ottawa was shut out as Brodeur increased his career shutout total to 27.

Petr Sykora scored his 11th goal at 7:36 of the first period. Doug Gilmour picked up a loose puck to the left of goaltender Damian Rhodes, brought it around the net and made a backhand pass to Sykora, who beat Rhodes high.

It was Gilmour's 50th assist as a Devil and his first point in six games.

The win gave New Jersey (32-16-6) sole possesion of first place in the Eastern Conference with 70 points.

The game also marked the end of a six-game road trip and a three-game winless streak for the Devils. They'll face Ottawa again on Wednesday, this time on home ice.

The Senators, seventh overall in the Eastern Conference, has now gone 3-2-1 in their last six games, all against conference rivals.

The Devils' victory cost them the services of Scott Daniels and Peter Zezel. Zezel had to leave early in the first period after taking a shot to his left foot. Daniels vacated the ice after being hit on the back of the head during a second period fight with Ottawa left wing Denny Lambert.
