Dave Price: Hip To Be Square

Dave Price proves once again that he really is a big ol' square.

The Early Show weatherman went to California to tape a week of "Hollywood Squares," the program that has made game show history since the late '60s when it starred Paul Lynde, Charley Weaver and host Peter Marshall.

Recently, Price got a chance to play a small part in the show. The following is his report from his experience.

Los Angeles in front of a hotel: It's just after 8 o'clock on a Saturday. I don't quite know what month it is because we're in L.A., so it's not quite obvious. But we're about to go to "Hollywood Squares." We stayed in this foo-foo massive hotel, and you know what? I didn't pay a penny.

Car – on the way to the CBS studios: No make-up, no hair. They tell us to bring a whole bunch of clothing because we change five times. We shoot five shows in one day, one after another after another.

The green screen. Remember: when "Hollywood Squares" opens, you have everyone kind of doing that opening dance while the credits roll. And Martin Mull is standing there straight. Well, they do it in front of a green screen. And then they superimpose a background, just like sometimes you see with the weatherman.

The studio: This is the same studio where "The Price is Right" is shot. It's called the Bob Barker studio in Television City. (Pointing at empty seats) And this is the audience that looks so massive when they say, "Come on down!"

The set: I am going to be sitting right next to Martin Mull, Roshumba Williams and Lou Rawls.

At the makeup room: Debra Jo Rough from "That Seventies Show" just asked me what I was doing here. I feel pretty great now. Oh.

Price to host Tom Bergeron: Debra Jo just asked me what I was doing here.

Bergeron: "I was going to ask him the same thing."

(Rough laughing in the background.)

Price: I'm a square, you know, I'm a big star.

Going to his own dressing room: Alright, I'll see you guys in a couple of minutes.

And out all dressed up: Alright, it's time to go do "Hollywood Squares."

Running into Henry Winkler. Winkler says to Price: "I love your work. I'm not kidding."

Price: Will you stop?

Winkler: "No. No. No. On 'The Sopranos,' I think that you're so scary."

Price: No, that's Steve Schirripa. (It will become a lot easier once my name is in the box.)

Show time! Bergeron's introduction: "He's the weatherman for CBS, the CBS Early Show. Let's give it up for Dave Price."

And the audience goes wild.

The question: Dave Price, weatherman on The Early Show, mornings on CBS. Dave, what came first: Roy Orbison's song, "Oh Pretty Woman," or Janet Reno?

Price: I think Janet Reno came before music.

Price is going to be on "Hollywood Squares" all week, so it will be a ball.
