Currie, the first witness to come before the panel in the four-month-old investigation in January, was expected to be asked about her dealings with Monica Lewinsky, a former White House intern with whom Mr. Clinton is alleged to have had a sexual affair.

Both Mr. Clinton and Lewinsky denied this under oath, and Mr. Clinton publicly denied a more serious allegation that he pressured Lewinsky and others to lie about their relationship.

This was Currie's fourth appearance before the grand jury brought together by independent counsel Kenneth Starr.

Currie's presence suggested the investigation might be focused on any help Lewinsky may have received in looking for work after she left the White House and a subsequent job at the Pentagon. The jury also may be looking at an exchange of gifts between Lewinsky and the president.

Currie, whose desk is just steps from the Oval Office, serves as Mr. Clinton's White House gatekeeper.
