Chicago Snaps Losing Streak
Right wing Tony Amonte scored his 18th goal of the season and the Chicago Blackhawks beat the Edmonton Oilers 3-2 Sunday night for their 2,000th franchise win in the NHL.
Amonte, who shares the league lead in goals with Philadelphia's John LeClair, tipped a shot from the point past goalie Mikhail Shtalenkov at 2:18 of the second period to give Chicago a 3-1 lead.
The Blackhawks halted a four-game losing streak, winning for only the second time in 16 games since Oct. 24.
Defensemen Chris Chelios and Dave Manson scored for Chicago in the first period, both on slap shots from the blue line.
Right wing Andrei Kovalenko scored for the Oilers in the first period and center Rem Murray added one in the third. Both were power-play goals.
The Oilers failed to capitalize on an excellent opportunity in the second period when Chicago defenseman Christian Laflamme was assessed a minor penalty for unsportsmanlike conduct and double-minor for high-sticking.
Edmonton was unable to generate much pressure during the six-minute power play, although the Oilers outshot Chicago 38-18 overall.
The Oilers remained first in the Western Conference's Northwest Division at 12-9-1. Chicago is last in the conference's Central Division at 6-14-3.
