Charity Golf Event Canceled

A charity golf event scheduled Tuesday was canceled in Payne Stewart's honor, but the Pacific Bell Senior Classic will go on as scheduled, a spokesman said.

"The tournament office received many calls from golf fans wondering if the event was going to proceed," Toby Zwikel said. "We're taking our direction from the Senior PGA Tour, which has determined that the competition will go on as scheduled."

The Ray Floyd Charity Challenge was called off after the Senior PGA Tour and PGA Tour canceled all events scheduled for Tuesday a day after Stewart, the U.S. Open champion, was killed in a plane crash.

Floyd, Joe Inman, Dana Quigley and Billy Casper were scheduled to play in the five-hole charity match.

Pro-am competition will begin as scheduled Wednesday morning at the Wilshire Country Club, site of the 54-hole tournament that starts Friday. Among the 78 golfers entered are Hale Irwin, Bruce Fleisher, Allen Doyle, Gil Morgan, Larry Nelson, Lee Trevino, Chi Chi Rodriguez and Gary Player.
