Can you still buy an HP TouchPad on the cheap?

HP TouchPad

(CBS) - So okay, that fire sale really was on fire. HP TouchPads - at super-low prices of $99 (16GB) and $149 (32 GB) - are sold out at BestBuy.com, Walmart.com and other major online retailers. What's one to do if one wants the tablet on the cheap then?

"The good news is, if you missed the first wave of TouchPad madness, but are still holding onto your cheaply priced webOS dream there is still hope," says PC Magazine. "Right now, several retailers are selling regularly [priced] TouchPads and there's a good chance prices may come down in the near future. HP is also promising a second wave of TouchPads in the next few days."

Also keep in mind that while the HP TouchPad is sold out at these online retailers, actual stores might still have them! Call your local Best Buys, for starters. Good E-Reader Blog says, "Best Buy put out a message today [August 24] stating that all remaining inventory will be sent out to various stores. They will be available on a first come and first serve basis. Not all locations in the USA and Canada will be getting them." Maybe you'll luck out?

But if you don't want to go door-to-door or wait for the next wave, you can pay a little more than the discounted $99 and $149, if you visit eBay for HP TouchPad auctions. At the moment, bids range from $200 to $350. (That's still cheaper than the original price tags of $399 for the 16GB and $499 for the 32GB.)

You can also check out this forum on Slickdeals.net for updates on when they come back in stock.

And it can't hurt for you to get on HP.com's radar. You can visit the site and fill out the short form with your name and email address to be notified when the HP TouchPad becomes available again at that awesomely discounted rate.

Good luck!
