Brian Benben Hits Primetime
Most people probably remember Brian Benben from the hit Home Box Office sitcom Dream On. This season on CBS, the dream becomes a reality as Benben slips into primetime with The Brian Benben Show, of which he is the star and co-executive producer, reports CBS 'This Morning' Co-Anchor Mark McEwen.
"I'm the co-executive producer, and that's frightening for everybody," says Benben. "What can they do? I have the title. Nothing they can say."
The road to his own network television show hasn't been easy.
"Oh gosh," he says. "It was a long and arduous path. In the early part of my career, in the 1970s, I did a lot of sort of dramatic kind of stuff. Then I started doing the comedic stuff. I don't know why. That's my life now or has been since the other show I did, Dream On.."
Unlike the cable broadcast Dream On, which often contained more mature content, The Brian Benben Show is designed to appeal to family audiences.
"Little kids could watch it," says Benben. "The idea is to have somethingÂ…different from the rest of the stuff on the network, but not so different that people won't watch. You want people to see what you're doing. We made a funny show, you know? We're stretching a bit for the network."
'The Brian Benben Show' premieres on CBS Monday at 9:30 p.m. EDT/PDT.
