Assessing The Damage

As part of the push for expanded offshore drilling, the GOP has been highlighting technological improvements that the party says make the process environmentally sound -- so sound, in fact, that there hasn’t been a significant spill since the one off the coast of Santa Barbara in 1969 and that even Hurricanes Rita and Katrina didn’t cause much crude-oil spillage from the offshore rigs in the Gulf. Some GOPers have gone as far to say that "not one drop" of oil spilled during the storms.

The claims, however, are not quite true.
