Apple iPhone revenue hits $150 billion in five years, says analyst
(CBS News) Apple's iPhone will celebrate its 5-year anniversary Friday. To mark the industry-changing smartphone's birthday, Strategy Analytics announced research suggesting that the company has raked in $150 billion in iPhone sales to date.
"Apple's first iPhone was launched commercially in the United States on June 29, 2007. Between June 2007 and June 2012, we estimate the iPhone family of models has generated $150 billion of cumulative revenues worldwide for Apple. This is an impressive achievement and it illustrates just how popular the iPhone has become during the past five years," Neil Shah, Senior Analyst at Strategy Analytics, said in a press release.
The figures only include hardware sales, Shah told CNET Wednesday. Accessories, apps, software and services were factored out of the research and counted for about 3 to 5 percent of sales.
Apple has been on the forefront of mobile technology since the release of the original iPhone in June 2007. Since then, Apple's mobile operating system, iOS, has been considered a hit with consumers and is widely regarded as a game changer for hand-held devices.
