What if they gave a doomsday and nobody came? That pretty much happened Tuesday. For weeks, the internet and even the opinion pages of the Wall Street Journal were predicting Iran might do something dire on 8/22. Didn't happen. Not even close. Oh, Iran did have a word or two to say about its nuke program. But, if anyone was wondering: the Labor Day cookouts are still on.

Meantime, don't expect George Bush to invite John McCain to any cookouts any time soon. And a new poll has some interesting news about the war in Iraq and the war on terror, as more Marines get ready to ship out, whether they want to or not.

Also: while yesterday didn't bring about a war of the worlds, it looks increasingly like Tom Cruise may have an impossible mission: salvaging his career.
