A Royal Breakup

We all know what it's like when a relationship breaks up. That conversation beginning with those immortal words "We need to talk…". But just imagine having to go through all of that and then brief your press officer to release the sad news to the world's media.

Imagine, too, being the newly titled EX-girlfriend of the future King of England. If you can, then you may be close to understanding what Kate Middleton is feeling right now as she faces a future without His Royal Highness Prince William. This young couple has been through university together, through harassment by the press together and now they must go through the speculation and chitter chatter of their separation apart.

He will continue his military career. At 24, he will now move on to a glorious life in the army protected from the glare of the press. He may even become a hero and have medals emblazoned across his chest. He will be okay.

But what of Kate? What does her future look like? She must surely now fade into the background with dignity. However there is a very good chance she won't be allowed to. Imagine the next boyfriend and the money he can make with a 'kiss and tell' story.

And what if she dreams that one day she and William will be reunited? If that is the case, she will have to be very, very careful about who she mixes with in the future. Any romance would be scrutinised, any love interest would be reviewed with special care by The Palace.

And don't think it couldn't happen. His father Prince Charles has form in this arena. He is now married to his old girlfriend Camilla and she had to divorce her husband to take her place at Prince Charles's side.

In my opinion, Kate has had a narrow escape. I considered marrying a cavalry officer myself at one point – though not royal, he still would have been away fighting wars for a good deal of our relationship. It would have been a miserable existence and that's without the press on my doorstep 24/7.

I would just say to her "Remember Diana" -- surely you want much better for yourself than that?
