A grudging spring in N.Y.

The daffodils in central park are on their last legs. And almost overnight the once glorious blossoming trees have already started to shed their petals. It has been a grudging spring in New York. The long winter gave way to a season that has been has been chilly and wet. The rare warm days have been greeted in the city like long lost friends. Sidewalk restaurant tables fill and people linger outside deep into the evening. Our instincts tell us it's time to shed our winter coats. But the thermometer informs us otherwise. Early this morning as I lie in bed watching the sky, I listened to the usual racket of the sparrows and starlings that wake before light. There amidst the din a new voice. Or voices. The mockingbird that's summered on our rooftop for several years has returned. If he's back warmer weather can't be far away.

Just a minute. I'm Harry Smith, CBS News.
