A Faster Acting Viagra?

The company that makes Viagra is looking to make the wildly popular anti-impotency drug work even faster, The Wall Street Journal reported Monday.

Pfizer Inc. has signed a deal with R.P. Scherer Corp. to develop a Viagra wafer that could dissolve in the mouth in seconds. That would let patients take the drug only minutes—instead of an hour—before sex, the Journal reported.

Pfizer said it is doing biochemical research on Scherer's Zydis delivery system and will proceed with human clinical trials if possible. The company said any new form of Viagra is still years away.

Scherer wouldn't comment on the deal, and neither company would disclose details.

In the three weeks Viagra has been available, drugstores nationwide have filled an estimated 150,000 prescriptions.
