U.S. Department Of Transportation To Announce Drone Registration Requirement, CBS News Says

LOS ANGELES (CBSLA.com) — Every drone in the United States could soon be required to be registered.

CBS News has learned that the U.S. Department of Transportation intends to announce a registration requirement as early as Monday.

The federal government reportedly wants to have the new rule in place before the holiday season because drones are expected to be a popular gift this year.

Citing CBS News, KNX 1070 NEWSRADIO also reports that a task force is expected to be formed to evaluate how to handle the growing technology.

This comes in response to growing concerns of the potential of a midair collision between a drone and a commercial aircraft.

Douglas Hajj, the owner of Drones Plus Studio City, told the radio station he is in favor of regulating the larger drones.

"The little ones, they're just toys. I mean the range they can go any further than 100 feet. The larger of the toy ones can go a little further than that but I don't think they can go far enough to do any damage," he said.

"But the larger drones, if they can reach a certain altitude, they definitely should be registered," he said.

Hajj says most people in the industry want registration.
