Deadly crash on PCH in Malibu likely caused by driver's medical emergency
A deadly crash on Pacific Coast Highway in Malibu on Tuesday, which heavily impacted afternoon traffic, was likely caused by a driver's medical emergency.
The crash happened around 12:50 p.m. on PCH between Paradise Cove and Winding Way, according to Los Angeles County Sheriff's Department deputies. The roadway was closed for several hours as a result.
The driver who died has been identified as 60-year-old Derek Schimming. "Preliminary investigation indicates (Schimming) was traveling southbound on Pacific Coast Highway in a gray 2008 Honda Civic nearing the intersection of West Winding Way when he possibly suffered from a medical emergency," the sheriff's station said in a statement.
Authorities said multiple witnesses saw the Honda abruptly veering into oncoming northbound traffic, striking a white van . Witnesses and emergency medical personnel attempted to revive the driver of the Honda, but were unsuccessful.
The driver of the van was transported to a hospital for non-life-threatening injuries.
SkyCal flew over the scene of the crash on Tuesday, where a severely damaged car could be seen in the middle of the road. A second vehicle, a white van, could be seen parked near some bushes on the shoulder with damage to its rear.
