Winter sowing and preparing for spring in Metro Detroit
ST. CLAIR COUNTY, Mich. (CBS DETROIT) - With temperatures below freezing and snow coming and going, gardening is likely the last thing you're considering in January.
However, one Metro Detroit mater gardener is already looking out for what could be sprouting in your garden come the spring.
CBS News Detroit's Luke Laster joins Jean Persely as she looks to plant the next season of Michigan gardens.
"I just get so excited about the possibilities, you know. To just hear people's stories, where are they at on their native plant journey, what are their hopes, dreams and goals for their garden, their yard, what do they have, what do they want, and how I can help them achieve that," Persley said on the way to winter gardening workshop.
This particular workshop is on winter sowing, a propagation method that allows you to get a head start on your spring gardening. Persely and the nonprofit Friends of the St. Clair River welcomed a group of eager gardeners, young and old, to the old St. Clair Middle School in St. Clair.
Persely says gardening is more than a hobby. It's family time, therapy, and her way of conserving the planet, even during the winter.
"It's just a natural high that you just, getting to see all that seeing all these native plants going home with everybody knowing that there are going to be plating for bees and butterflies and hummingbirds and the wildlife is just wonderful," Persely said.
