State Lawmakers Return With Budget Unresolved

Michigan lawmakers have returned to session at the state Capitol after a two-week break and they're still trying to fix the state's government budget problems.

Democratic Gov. Jennifer Granholm said Wednesday her administration is talking with key lawmakers to discuss the budget situation.

Granholm wants Congress to revive a bill that would provide states with more federal money for health care for the poor. Michigan is one of several states that will have more severe budget problems if that Medicaid money isn't approved.

Michigan leaders were expecting to get more than $500 million from the measure that is stalled in the U.S. Senate.

Michigan's public schools are safe from further budget cuts but other programs could have their funding reduced.
