Local Stores Celebrate Free Comic Book Day

DETROIT (WWJ) - Comic book stores all over the Metro area are celebrating the Tenth Annual Free Comic Book Day (FCBD) on Saturday, May 7.

FCBD is a worldwide event in which more than 2.5 million comics will be available for free at nearly 2000 comic book specialty stores in the U.S., Canada and nearly three dozen other countries around the world.

FCBD is an event that spotlights the wonderful and diverse entertainment medium of comic books.

An estimated 300,000 to 500,000 people of all ages and reading interests visit comic book stores on the first Saturday in May each year to pick up special edition FCBD comics for free.

The event was founded in 2001 by ComicsPRO president Joe Field as a way to introduce new readers to the diverse stories and genres offered in comic books.

"The most important point I'd like everyone to know is that, if you like to read, there are comic books and graphic novels that you will want to come back to month after month for a completely engaging reading experience," Field said in a release.

FCBD is also an opportunity to win back former readers and thank current comic book fans.

"Free Comic Book Day has become a real holiday for everyone who loves comics and those who are curious about the riches of this amazing entertainment medium," Field said  in a release. "The comics' medium is so diverse, with comics for readers of all ages, from kids to teens to adults, from those looking for the edgiest new comics to those nostalgists who simply want to rekindle their love of the comics of their youth."

Below is a list of just some of the Metro area stores participating in FCBD:

"I'll suggest something bold here, too. This year, if Free Comic Book Day is your first time to visit your local comic book store, make it a point to come back again the following week to see all the new titles and to  talk more with your local retailer who will guide you to find some great reading material," Field said in a release.
