Health Insurance Changes
Heads up! Important changes may be coming soon to your health insurance plan, especially when it comes to covering your adult children.
Under federal reforms passed earlier this year, young adults will be able to stay on their parents' health care plans until age 26. The change becomes effective with enrollment for plans beginning on or after September 23rd.
However, many insurers have already begun implementing this change before the deadline.
Commissioner of Michigan's Office of Financial and Insurance Regulation, Ken Ross, said this brings coverage to a lot of uninsured people.
"They're the population tha's most likely to be uninsured. And, they also, because of where they're at in their careers, they're at the lowest percentage of having access to employer-based health insurance," he said.
"If you have a plan that covered dependants only up to age 19, and you have a 23-year-old daughter or son, this could be a significant and meaningful benefit for you," Ross said.
Ross advises people to talk to their employer and find out what the situation is within your particular group plan. Ross said, "Asking a few basic questions can get you into a position where you are a more educated and informed consumer about these important benefits."
