Fan Favorite From 'Star Wars' Arrested For Political Beliefs

By: Sara

It is a good thing the new "Star Wars" movie is coming out soon, because Chewbacca has fallen on hard times. Chewie was arrested recently because he was campaigning for Darth Vader. Wait...what?!? The explanation comes down to Ukrainian politics.

A guy who dresses as Darth Vader and legally changed his name to "Darth Vader" has been running for mayor of a city in Ukraine. A political group called the "Internet Party" runs a lot of "Star Wars" characters for public office in Ukraine. Last year the group tried to get the Sith Lord a position as prime minister, but for some reason a fictional evil character just wasn't everyone's cup of tea. He lost last year, and this year. Resistance from rebels maybe?

The problem for our fine furry friend came when Chewbacca decided to promote his candidate outside of a polling station. That is a big no no on election day. Chewie put up a valiant struggle as the cops arrested him, but the Wookie ran into to even bigger problems when he got to court.

Officials tried to fine Han Solo's right hand creature a whopping $8. But instead of a disturbance in the force, there was a disturbance in Chewbacca's wallet. He claimed he couldn't pay the fine because all of his money is in a, quote, "intergalactic bank that has no branches on this planet."
