Fairlane Town Center Hosts Kids 'N Kicks Summer Walking Program

DEARBORN (WWJ) - Keeping kids away from T-V and video games in the summer can be a challenge, but one area program has some cool incentives to get kids moving.
Blue Cross Blue Shield of Michigan and Fairlane Town Center in Dearborn are again partnering for the Fifth Annual Kids 'n Kicks Summer Walking Program.
Melissa Countryman, with Blue Cross Blue Shield, said it's a fun way for kids and parents to rack up some serious steps.
"They'll walk at their own level or at their own pace, some of the kids will do a little bit of speed walking and others will just do more of a casual walk, but the essential thing is that they're actually walking," she said.
Countryman said some special Saturday events are designed to emphasize exercise and healthy eating.
"The next thing that we'll also be doing is teaching kids how to grow their own vegetables. So, we put a real good focus in on eating healthy and getting children and adults to understand that it's very important to not only eat healthy but to also move and get in some physical fitness," she said.
The Kids 'n Kicks Program runs through August 16th, and it's free to kids and their families.
