Wintry Conditions Blamed In Fatal Ike Pileup
(STMW) -- An elderly man was killed and three other people were injured in a 13-vehicle crash on the Eisenhower Expressway early Saturday, police said.
The chain-reaction crash likely was caused by black ice on the outbound lanes of I-290 near Central about 12:40 a.m., according to Illinois State Police.
Investigators believe the 71-year-old man was outside of his black 2007 Audi A5 and was struck by another vehicle during the crash, police said. He was taken to Loyola University Medical Center in Maywood, where he later died.
The Cook County medical examiner's office did not immediately confirm the fatality.
Two females injured in the crash were taken to Loretto Hospital, while one female was taken to Mount Sinai Hospital, police said. Their exact ages weren't immediately known, but their injuries were not considered life-threatening.\
Outbound lanes were temporarily closed between Laramie and Central while crews reconstructed the crash and worked to clear the scene, police said. All lanes were reopened at 10:29 a.m.
