Waitress Re-Paid For Act Of Kindness

CHICAGO (WBBM) -- A suburban waitress is being re-paid for her kindness.

Two years ago, Marie Kernin noticed that one of her regulars at the Peacock Family Restaurant in Waukegan was wearing a tattered and worn coat.

So she went out and bought a new one for Peg Hewitt.

"I set the coat down next to her and she asked what it was. I told her 'Just take a look at it.' So she looked at it and fell in love with it," said Kernin.

Two weeks ago, Hewitt died at the age of 95. This week, a neighbor and friend of the elderly woman came into the restaurant and handed Kernin an envelope that Hewitt had left behind for her.

"When I opened up the envelope, there was a picture of Peg and a thousand dollar check," said Kernin.

Kernin says in her 25 years as a waitress, the biggest tip she'd ever gotten before was $50.

This is one tip, she says, she'll remember forever.
