What are the top five things small businesses can do to be successful in terms of HR?
 

1. Be clear on what you do. We have all heard the old adage, 'a jack of all trades.' A small business owner must be able to clearly articulate what they do and their benefit to the prospective client.
    
2. Walk the talk. Make sure you mirror the values that your business portrays as an expertise.
    
3. Hire the right people. As one management guru advocates, get the right people on the bus. It is very tempting as a small business to succumb to the pressure of hiring relatives, friends and past coworkers, all of whom may have great skills but not the skills that you need to be successful. Know when to politely decline the offers of help.
    
4. Don't use the excuse of being a small business. It is is imperative to have best practice policies and procedures in place. Find out what is best practice in your particular industry and customize it to your scope and size.
    
5. Show appreciation. Numerous studies on job satisfaction are conducted annually, yet they all find that throwing money at people does not necessarily move the needle on productivity. Genuinely showing appreciation and saying 'thank you' on a regular basis for a job well done is one of the major keys to keeping the talent you need to be successful.
