Alsip Mayor Questioned Over Public Misspending

ALSIP, Ill. (CBS) - The mayor of south suburban Alsip is catching some flak for how he spent village funds.

The Chicago Tribune reports Alsip Mayor Patrick Kitching used $1,000 of taxpayers' money to pay for a golf outing, which was also a fundraiser for a Cook County commissioner.

The Tribune reports the Village of Alsip General Fund gave $500 in June 2007 and another $500 a year later to the Committee to Elect Joan Patricia Murphy, a Democratic county commissioner from Crestwood.

Under state law, no public money may be used for political purposes.

Kitching says at first, he didn't realize the golf trips were considered fundraisers, and he repaid the money.
