State Approves $30 Million Youth Jail For Baltimore
BALTIMORE (AP) -- State officials have approved a $30 million, 60-bed jail to house Baltimore teenagers as adults.
WJZ media partner The Baltimore Sun reports the Board of Public Works unanimously approved the deal without discussion Wednesday to prevent youth offenders from being incarcerated with adults.
The U.S. Justice Department criticized the Baltimore City Detention Center in March for housing youths charged as adults alongside the general population. The organization says the center has been violating the law by doing that. Teens were often secluded and didn't receive school or other services while incarcerated with adults.
It is unclear when the jail would be completed.
