Maryland Live Casino Now Hiring For Summer Opening
HANOVER, Md. (WJZ)—Monday may have been a day off for many, but not those looking for work.
Alex DeMetrick reports a windfall of 1,500 new casino jobs opened to applicants in Anne Arundel County.
The temperature was still trying to climb out of the 20s when the line began forming.
The reason..
"It's a lot of jobs. I hope I get one," one man said.
There are 1,500 new jobs at the Maryland Live Casino at Arundel Mills.
"Just got laid off in December and trying to find work. This opened up perfectly," said Ken Hancock, job applicant.
"I've been looking for work for about five months now, so I'm hoping this will open up an opportunity for me. Hopefully I get in quick and not get laid off too long," said Wanda Hall, job applicant.
And as quickly as the office opened, it quickly filled.
"We're going to have everything from hourly tipped employees to six figure executive jobs," said Rob Norton, casino president and general manager.
While online applications are possible, banks of computers have been set up to apply for those jobs.
They won't all open at once, but as they do, "you're going to get an email to your address that the job for a cook has been posted and it's going to alert you to apply for that position," said a Maryland Live employment recruiter.
Besides resumes and job experience, those doing the hiring are looking for a specific trait.
"The most important thing is to bring your personality," Norton said. "We're looking for excited, fun people to help create an environment for our customers when they come in. You have to be able to create that service experience."
"Right now I'm only working eight hours a week. They cut me from 40 hours to eight hours, so you can't make it on that," said Paula Shurger, job applicant.
After coming in from a chilly economy, gambling on a casino with 1,500 openings feels like much warmer odds.
The Maryland Live Casino is a $500 million project set to open this summer.
