"The Baltimore City Fire Department arrived on the scene within 5 minutes and had the fire completely out within an hour," said councilman Zeke Cohen. "A neighbor ran into one of the homes and attempted to pull out an elderly woman."

Firefighters rescued two adults, who were taken to an area hospital with serious injuries.

"It looked like gigantic sparklers in the back of the house and then you saw the smoke and the flames coming through," a neighbor told WJZ.

As of midnight Tuesday, firefighters had placed the blaze under control.

In a Facebook post, a woman identifying herself as the daughter of the neighbor said that true heroes emerge in the darkest hour.

Tuesday, residents addressed the damage to their property, with their minds on the neighbors.

"Mr. Pierre, a nice guy, brings a smile to your face because he's just a good fun-loving neighbor and I'm not surprised for his heroic actions," a neighbor told WJZ.

The cause of the fire is under investigation.
