Former Police Commissioner Bealefeld Is Now A Professor At Stevenson

BALTIMORE (WJZ) -- Baltimore's former top cop Fred Bealefeld is now Professor Bealefeld! He's a distinguished professional on the criminal justice faculty at Stevenson University.

Pat Warren reports Bealefeld is keeping his finger on the pulse of public safety.

He made an impact as Baltimore City Police Commissioner.

Now the city's homicide rate is climbing, but Fred Bealefeld will be addressing the issue for students rather than officers.

"I'm confident that they'll move the city back in the correct direction," Bealefeld said.

The former commissioner who retired in August is now a full-time criminal justice faculty member at Stevenson University and he intends to bring students out of the classroom and into the real world.

"I hope to bring some of that. I also hope to bring three decades of the city's history with me. I know what worked there; I know what didn't work," Bealefeld said.

And his goal is to help students determine their purpose.

"Law enforcement and public safety is not a job, it's a calling. It's a dedication," Bealefeld said.

With Baltimore City as a model for this real world public safety perspective, Bealefeld will help Stevenson University build a center for criminal justice.

Stevenson University is the third largest independent undergraduate university in Maryland.
