Father Shoots And Kills Pit Bull In Severn

SEVERN, Md. (WJZ) -- Another dog has been shot and killed in Anne Arundel County.  The shooting happened not far from the dog park where a dog named Bear-Bear was shot in 2010.

Andrea Fujii reports police say the 4-year-old dog was shot in the torso and died right before he got to a doctor.

It was around 11 a.m. Sunday.

Police say two people were walking a pit bull named Kayne in the 1800-block of Oriole Court in Severn.

They came across a group of three young people, walking a pit bull named Gyno.

"He was not on a leash at all.  My dog was on a leash," said Monica Moye, Kayne's owner.

Moye says the two dogs quickly began fighting.  One of the people walking Gyno ran back home to get help.

"The father came out with a gun and shot my dog," said Moye.

Before the family could get Kayne to the vet, he died.

"I feel real distraught because my daughter, she could've been injured. This is something that you have to really know your surroundings when you're firing out in the open like that," said Moye's mother.

The shooting comes less than a year after an off-duty federal police officer shot a Siberian Husky named Bear-Bear in a Severn dog park.

The officer, Keith Shepherd, claimed Bear-Bear lunged at him and his wife while they were walking their dog.

A judge gave Shepherd probation before judgment, meaning he served community service, but no jail time.  Some people in the community are drawing some outrage.

"We just can't get any help. He comes to a dog park where children are, where people are with a loaded gun, shoots an innocent dog and again the dog loses," said Wendy Cozzone, Bear-Bear supporter.

Now, Kayne's owner is ready for a legal battle.

"Right now all I want is to seek justice in this case.  He has to be locked up, something," said Moye.

The 32-year-old man who allegedly shot Kayne called police after the incident, as did Kayne's owners.

Police are investigating whether the shooter has a license to carry a handgun.
