Everyman Theatre Hosts Sensory Experience For Audiences

BALTIMORE (WJZ) -- A unique sensory experience is underway at Baltimore's Everyman Theatre. They've opened their doors to those who can't see and have created a new way to go to a play.

The stage is set for a theater experience like no other.

"People would never say they were going to see a play in the 16th and 17th century. They would say they were going to hear a play," said Marcus Kyd, Everyman Theatre.

Before the actors come on, a "touch tour" is underway for a group of blind adults who use other sense to experience a play.

"I think it adds texture to what's happening. The plays are very rich and it leaves the imagination to fill in some gaps," said Maurice Peret, Blind Industries and Services of Maryland.

It's about feeling the different textures and getting a sense of what the costumes look like through touch.

"There were props located in different areas of the stage so I could imagine a bar scene that, if I am correct, if I am facing the stage, it would be on the left-hand side," said Sharon Haskins-Brown.

The Everyman Theatre hosts this touch tour every year. It's their commitment to producing plays that are both affordable and accessible to everyone.

"You can take so much information from what you can feel and from what you can hear and that's important not to forget as humans," Kyd said.

The Everyman Theatre has done this for many years. Their current production, "The Beaux Stratagem," runs through June 30.
