Cyclists Ride From Newtown To D.C. To Raise Awareness Of Gun Violence
BALTIMORE (WJZ) -- Team 26, a group of cyclists who started their 400 mile trek from Newtown, Conn., stopped in Baltimore on their way to D.C.
Political reporter Pat Warren has more on the reason for their ride.
The riders set out to raise awareness of gun violence in the wake of Sandy Hook.
Each member of Team 26 represents one of the 20 students and six adults killed by Adam Lanza in the December shooting attack on Sandy Hook Elementary School.
"I appeal to those who have not experienced such a loss to look deep into their hearts and do that which they think cannot be done," said Chris McDonnell.
The ride's organizer, Monte Frank, represents his daughter's teacher, Victoria Soto.
"We're united as Americans and we need to solve this problem," Frank said.
"When I look at the resolve on their faces, I feel comfortable and confident that we will continue to move in the right direction," said Mayor Stephanie Rawlings-Blake.
The riders will be joined Tuesday in College Park by a group from the Virginia Tech victims' riding team and together, they will ride into Washington.
Their message to lawmakers is sensible gun legislation.
The Maryland Senate has passed gun control legislation for the Senate. The bill is now in the House.
