Community Devastated After Fatal Accident On Prom Night

HAGERSTOWN, Md. (WJZ) -- Killed on the way home from prom. The lives of two beloved Maryland teens ended in a split second.

Mary Bubala has more on how they're being remembered.

Shattered car parts still litter the ground and friends keep adding to the memorial: Brendon Colliflower's batting glove and his sunglasses; volleyballs for Samantha Kelly.

"It's pretty hard, yeah," said one student.

The couple had left the prom; Kelly apparently wanted to change. There is a bit of a rise and then a sharp turn. The car left the road, skidded along the embankment and then slammed into a tree.

"I heard that they...had a bet with another group, that they were going to get to the house faster than them. I don't know if that is true but I think people are going to take driving a little more seriously," said a student.

Police say Colliflower was speeding in his Honda sports car but they have yet to release an estimate of how fast they think he was going.

"I just want them to know that Brendon was a great guy, Sam was a great girl and they will be missed," said a student.

The Hagerstown paper had named Colliflower the All-County Pitcher of the Year. Kelly was a star in both volleyball and tennis. Both were seniors on the honor roll.

"Brendon, he was one of the nicest kids I knew. He was the pitcher and I was the catcher," a student said.

At Williamsport High School, students say there is just silence and tears. On a Monday after the crash, one teacher broke down and started crying in front of her class and students tried---and failed---to make sense of this.

"Today, we should be looking back at prom and remembering the parties and the pictures, not remembering the two people who just passed away," said a student.

A school district spokesman says he is still waiting for news on funeral arrangements for the teens.

The investigation into the crash is ongoing.
