BALTIMORE -- People in Canton are mourning the loss of a neighbor who was killed in a robbery just after midnight on Friday.

The gunshot victim is 57-year-old Darrell Benner. People who live along South Curley Street describe him as the neighbor that everybody knew.

Officers found Benner suffering from a fatal gunshot wound. Police say three people with guns robbed Benner. His family said he was moving a red Dodge Charger for his nephew before he was shot, and the men got away in the car.

Come daybreak, neighbors began consoling each other after learning about what had happened.

"There was still blood on the street and some neighbors were cleaning up the blood and scrubbing the blood and washing it away," one neighbor said.

People who live along South Curley Street are part of a close-knit community. They all know one another. Some of them bought flowers and candles to remember Benner.

"Darrell was a great guy. He was a really wonderful neighbor," Benner said. "He was always friendly. Always so easy to talk to. Always willing to stop and have a chat."

Homicide detectives are asking anyone with information to contact them at 410-396-2100 or Metro Crime Stoppers at 1-866-7Lockup.
