'Bike Jam' Kicks Off In Baltimore
BALTIMORE (WJZ) – National surveys show more people are biking around on two wheels now than ever before. In fact, it's up by 13 percent in the past decade. That trend is helping the organizers of the biggest single day biking event in Baltimore.
Mike Schuh reports.
Wheel to wheel. Their motor: heart, lung and leg. This is the day to be a bike lover in Baltimore.
Barry Wilcox prepares his 11-year-old Nathan, one of his six kids, to race on the one-mile circuit.
"Baltimore loves cycling; it doesn't get better than this. This is probably the premier event of the year," said Wilcox.
It's called the Baltimore Bike Jam, attracting experienced riders and people like Chrissa Carlson. This is her first race ever.
"I've done triathlons before but never a strict bike race, so butterflies? Yes, aggressive butterflies," she said.
There are races at Patterson Park all day at all skill levels. But there's more than just that. There's stunt riding, too.
"I think there are a handful of people in the world that probably would even try it and have the balance or skill to do it," said stunt rider "Schwinney."
There's even a stunt rider who is legally blind.
So whether you bring your music with you strapped onto your rig or your music is shifting gears, Bike Jam does not disappoint.
