VTA Proposes $17M Light Rail Extension From Campbell To Los Gatos

SANTA CLARA (KCBS) — Valley Transit Authority (VTA) is proposing to extend their existing Mountain View to Winchester light rail line 1.6 miles from Campbell to Los Gatos at an estimated cost of $17 million. It would be the first extension of the services light rail since 2005.

The project would begin at the Winchester Station in Campbell and continue to Los Gatos and would consist of two phases depending on available funding according to VTA spokeswoman Brandi Childress.

KCBS' Mike Colgan Reports:

She added that there would be an expansion of the tracks at Winchester, as well as along the Vasona Corridor alignment, and that they'd have to do double tracking there in order to accommodate the extra trains. "We'll have one station at the Vasona Junction [Station] along with a Park & Ride lot."

The plan also calls for the construction of a new Hacienda Light Rail Station with an optional Park & Ride lot in its second phase.

Childress was pleased to say that the extension would bring light rail to the West Valley and noted that Los Gatos residents currently have to take a community bus and then connect to light rail. With light rail they'd be able to make the trip into Downtown San Jose from the new Vasona Station in 22 minutes.
