Vacaville Pet Goes Missing After Being Shot With Arrow
VACAVILLE (CBS) - A family is trying to track down a bird they own that was shot with an arrow. They're also trying to find the person who shot their beloved peahen so they can deliver a message.
A peahen is a female version of a peacock, and the family fears theirs is suffering.
"We just cried," said owner Judy Reed. "Just can't even comprehend what we really saw."
Judy and husband Ken Reed own about 40 peacocks and peahens on their 20 acres of land tucked away in a serene part of Vacaville. So they were shocked when they woke up Saturday morning and saw one of their birds pierced by an arrow.
"I thought, 'How cruel; how could somebody do that?'" said Ken.
Now they're worried about how much she's suffering.
"You would expect her to lay down and die, and she's just walking around with this thing sticking out of both sides of her," said Judy.
The birds keep the rattlesnakes away from the property. Now the Reeds are focused on keeping the culprit away, concerned whoever is responsible will return and hurt even more of their pets.
"What kind of a heartless person would do that?" asked Ken.
So they're trying to trap their peahen, hoping to rescue her before it's too late.
"This is a nice place to live. We don't need a person like that here," said Ken.
The Reeds are offering a $500 reward for information leading to the arrest and conviction of the person responsible. They also filed a report with the sheriff's department.
