Good Question: How Did Oakland Help Out In The 1906 Earthquake?
OAKLAND (CBS 5) – This city became a refuge following San Francisco's darkest day. Keith asked this Good Question: How did Oakland help San Francisco after the 1906 Earthquake and Fire?
ANSWER: The city of Oakland provided refuge to more than 200,000 San Francisco residents displaced by the 1906 earthquake and fire. Drew Johnson of the Oakland Museum of History said the city helped San Francisco by providing housing and a terminal for building materials that would arrive in the area by rail.
Quake damage was extensive in Oakland as well, but the city was able to respond since it was not affected by fire. Many earthquake evacuees would remain in the East Bay after the disaster, choosing to settle there rather than return to a damaged San Francisco.
