Phoenix-SFO Jet Loses Engine Part, Makes Emergency Landing

PHOENIX (CBS / AP) -- Authorities say an American Airlines plane bound for San Francisco had to return to Phoenix's airport after losing part of an engine cowling.

Federal Aviation Administration spokesman Ian Gregor says the incident occurred about 8:30 a.m. MST Monday and the plane landed safely 10 minutes later at Phoenix Sky Harbor International Airport.

An airline spokeswoman says they're working to determine what caused the part to come loose and Gregor says the FAA is investigating.

A cowling is a removable cover for an engine.

Gregor says American Airlines flight 403 lost part of the right engine cowling while departing Phoenix for San Francisco International Airport.

American Airlines spokeswoman Polly Tracey says the part was recovered on Sky Harbor property and no one was injured.
