Utah man accused of making threats against President Biden, New York lawmakers fatally shot by FBI agents
NEW YORK -- Federal agents on Wednesday shot and killed man in Utah who had made threats on social media against President Joe Biden, Manhattan District Attorney Alvin Bragg and New York Attorney General Letitia James.
Just hours before Biden arrived in Utah on Wednesday, Utah FBI agents say they tried to arrest Craig Robertson, who had posted online a few days earlier that he'd be "cleaning the dust off the M24 sniper rifle" ahead of Biden's visit.
A witness described the moments before federal agents shot and killed Robertson in his Provo neighborhood.
"He kept shouting something, too. Like, 'I haven't broken any federal laws.' And so he was clearly there, heard a lot of loud bangs," he said.
CBS News has learned the FBI had been investigating Robertson for five months for allegedly posting violent threats against government officials, including Bragg, James and U.S. Attorney General Merrick Garland.
Investigators said he posted on Truth Social in March that he was heading to New York to fulfill a dream of killing Bragg.
Federal investigators said photos Robertson posted showed "his ability to conduct sniper tactics."
Court records show he posted other pictures of guns online, including one with the disturbing caption: "Long-range Democrat, hypocrite eradicator."
Investigators have not said exactly what led them to shoot Robertson, but federal prosecutors say he posted online on July 27 that he'd be ready with a loaded gun if the FBI dropped by.
U.S. Attorneys also said he threatened California Gov. Gavin Newson and U.S. Attorney General Merrick Garland.
