Stockton Mom And Pop Pharmacy Closes After 80 Years

STOCKTON (CBS13) - The Stockton pharmacy was around when the country went off to World War II, and has changed hands through the generations, but now it's the end of an era.

A sign on the door of Green Brothers Pharmacy says it all.

"I'm really going to miss them very, very much," customer Vickie Green said.

Founded in 1930, the original store stood tall in the heart of downtown Stockton. Now, loyal customers are forced to say good-bye to the mom and pop pharmacy.

"They were friendly, very friendly and you never had to wait. Everything was just convenient," said Green.

Closed a week ago, on Friday employees carried out bags of binders. The owner and his wife didn't want to speak with CBS13; but according to The Stockton Record, owner Charlie Green decided at age 69 it was time to retire.

"All the workers that used to be here, we knew them all by name," customer Greg Jimenez said. "When you call, they would know your voice."

In the Green family for more than eight decades, the independent pharmacy laid roots not only in Stockton, but opened stores in Sacramento, Redding and San Andreas back in the 1970s and 1980s.

"It's getting harder and harder to find things like this these days. Everything is just changing with the times," said Jimenez.

Prescriptions have been forwarded to a local Walgreens. Some customers say they'll try to find another locally owned drug store.
