More Than 1 Million Cats Saved By Cutting Euthanasia Rates
UC DAVIS (CBS13) — Four years ago an initiative was started by UC Davis called the "Million Cat Challenge."
It was basically a push to save 1 million cats from euthanization in five years. They only needed four years to reach that goal.
A local shelter is also celebrating cat saving success in Yuba County.
Yuba County Animal Care Services previously had an 80 percent kill rate of cats. The not-for-profit group, FieldHaven Feline Center started a major push to get those numbers down.
Among other improvements, they held spay and neuter workshops to help keep the population down.
The shelter now has a lifesaving rate of more than 80 percent, eclipsing the previous kill rate.
