Fire At Antelope Little League Park Being Investigated As Arson

ANTELOPE (CBS13) - A fire that caused thousands of dollars in damage at a local little league baseball field is being investigated as arson.

The fire broke out at around 2:30 p.m. Sunday at the Antelope Little League Baseball Field. Fire crews arrived to find the equipment building, which also houses the snack bar, and a portable toilet in flames, says Sacramento Metropolitan Fire District spokesperson Michelle Eidam.

Fire crews tried to save as much of the building as they could, but it still suffered significant damage.

Little league player Gehrig Anderson was forced to practice with a singed baseball from the equipment room.

"It's the only sport I've ever played. I kinda grew up in baseball," said Anderson.

"I cried a little. It's pretty bad. I'd like to see it back again," said league president Kimberli Heck.

Heck says the snack bar is vital for the league.

"The building is probably one of the biggest revenues to offset some of the costs," she said. "I'm sick. I'm actually really angry there's people out there willing to take this away from the kids," she said.

Anderson is still able to play -- even if it's with a burned ball. The league is hoping somehow they'll be able to raise the money needed so Anderson and other kids can play next season too.

Arson investigators think the fire started in the portable toilet and spread to the building. Damage is estimated to be around $20,000.

No injuries were reported.
