Black Ice Causes Cars To Spin Out On Carmichael Roadway

CARMICHAEL (CBS13) – Freezing temperatures and leaking water turned part of Fair Oaks Boulevard into an ice rink this morning sending car after car skidding and crashing in Carmichael.

Black Ice coated parts of Fair Oaks Boulevard near Hollister in the early morning hours. Several cars, trucks and a motorcycle lost control and crashed after hitting the slick roadway.

One of the drivers says she was slowing down to stop for a red light when her SUV began sliding and would not stop. She says she's never experienced driving conditions like this during her entire life living in California.

"It is scary because the car wouldn't stop. I haven't dealt with that before," said Rochelle who was shaken up but not hurt after crashing her SUV.

Another driver also spun out, skidding up over a curb onto a lawn. Two of the cars tires are now flattened.

"Absolutely no idea at all, nope. 'I'm about to die', that's how it felt, kinda scary," said Ginny Demery. "Thought I was going flip. I went up on the grassy area of the complex."

CBS13 cameras also caught a pick up truck spinning out as it hit the ice narrowly missing another car.

Minutes later, Chris Hayes lost control of his motorcycle and crashed. Something he says has never happened in six years of riding.

Officers eventually closed off the lane frozen with black ice and the county sent out trucks to sand down the road. Luckily, no major injuries were reported.

Crews say the freezing temperatures didn't cause the pipe to break. They say it was due to age.
