Spider-Man's 15 most iconic moments
Spider-Man will be slinging back to the silver screen, thanks to a deal between Sony Pictures and Marvel/Disney to co-produce new films.
Peter Parker will be recast (sorry, Andrew Garfield!) and the story brought into the same "reality" as "The Avengers" and "Thor."
2. Comic debut
In 1962, Spidey made his first appearance in Marvel’s "Amazing Fantasy #15." With a unique approach that drew from super hero action and realistic high school drama, Spider-Man had a vibe that other heroes couldn't touch.
3. The bite
In the original movie trilogy directed by Sam Raimi, Tobey Maguire's Peter Parker is bitten by a super spider that gives the scrawny high schooler his abilities to climb walls and shoot webs.
4. Battle of superheroes
In 1976, the comic "Superman vs. The Amazing Spider-Man" was released, where two of the most iconic heroes (from entirely different fictional universes!) faced off in the most unlikely battle of the century. We won't tell you who wins...
5. $114,844,116
That's the opening weekend box office for "Spider-Man" in 2002. At that time, it was the largest opening weekend in history, and the massive crowd-pleaser went on to gross $404 million.
6. Spidey meets Barack Obama
Published just days before the 2009 inauguration, the web-slinger gets to meet (and save) the president of the United States.
7. The Symbiote costume
In 1984, Spidey got a popular new look. And even though Peter Parker looked great in black, the Symbiote costume was actually an alien that copied and upgraded Spider-Man's abilities. After rejecting the suit, it found a mate with Eddie Brock, or as you might know him...Venom.
8. The most profitable superhero
The box office is one barometer for success, but – as George Lucas can attest – licensing revenue is a huge factor. And for Spidey, he makes the most green for a guy wearing a red and blue suit. In 2013, Spider-Man sold approximately $1.3 billion in product compared to the Avengers’ $325 million and Batman’s $494 million. That's a lot of grocery money for Aunt May!
9. That upside-down kiss
It's very hard to top: Spider-Man (Tobey Maguire) snagging his first kiss with Mary Jane Watson (Kirsten Dunst) in the 2002 movie, as Spidey slowly descends upside-down.
10. Goodbye Harry
In 1996, the iconic characters of Spidey and arch-baddie Green Goblin battle it out in one of their most intense (and sad) fights. Unfortunately, Parker must bid adieu to his one-time best friend.
11. The most influential superhero
Spider-Man's popularity clearly influenced other comic book heroes. With the introduction to more grounded, real-life issues and an emphasis on Spidey's alter ego, there's no question the web-slinger helped shape storylines of everyone from Batman to Wolverine.
12. "The Night Gwen Stacy Died"
Fans of the comic book will surely remember this twist, even if it happened way back in 1973. Spider-Man could not save former love interest, Gwen Stacy, from Norman Osborn's cruelty.
13. Hello Mary Jane!
Back in 1966, Peter Parker's neighbor, Mary Jane Watson, is introduced to readers for the first time. Her first words to him: "Face it Tiger... You hit the jackpot!" Yes, he did.
14. Spidey Super Stories
Spider-Man's continued popularity can be attributed to comics and the movie franchise. But for kids of the '70s, Spidey Super Stories on PBS' "The Electric Company" was an unforgettable intro.
15. Unmasked
In "Civil War #2," Marvel threw a curveball when Spider-Man unmasked himself to the public on national TV. You never see Batman doing that, do ya?
