Worker trapped at Manhattan construction site

NEW YORK A construction worker has been trapped in mud at the Second Avenue subway construction site in upper Manhattan.

Fire officials say 106 firefighters have responded to the scene at Second Avenue and East 95th Street. They say the worker is trapped chest high in a trench.

Fire officials say the scene has been secured and debris was being removed around the trapped worker. They say the worker is alert. His condition was not immediately clear.

CBS Station WCBS New York reported that the worker was under threat of hypothermia, and was being helped by doctors who came to the scene.

Joe Hinchey, a physician, came from his nearby apartment."I live right here," he told CBS 2, "and someone said there was a bunch of people or a person trapped down there, so I figured maybe they could use the hand."

A spokesman for Consolidated Edison says the utility has sent a vacuum truck to scene. He says the truck helps remove debris from manholes.

It happened at around 8:30 p.m. Tuesday.
