Winona Ryder Goes On Trial

Although she's made light of it on Saturday Night Live, actress Winona Ryder faces serious charges as her trial began Thursday in Beverly Hills.

The star of "Girl, Interrupted," and other films was arrested for shoplifting in December. The formal charges are grand theft, second-degree burglary and vandalism.

She could go to prison for three years if convicted.

Employees of Saks Fifth Avenue said Ryder left the store without paying for the hats, handbags and tops she was carrying. One official said she saw Ryder cutting security sensors off some bags.

Ryder was carrying some painkillers that day. Her doctor says he gave them to her without a prescription and the judge dismissed a drug charge against the actress.
