William, Kate: Even stars clamor to meet them

After spending the past nine days in Canada, Prince William and his new wife, Catherine, -- otherwise known as the Duke and Dutchess of Cambridge -- head to Los Angeles today. They will be greeted at the airport by California Gov. Jerry Brown.

The royal newlyweds, CBS News National Correspondent Ben Tracy reports, have a schedule full of glitz, glamor and charity while visiting the world's biggest city for celebrities.

And it's not just the general public that's fascinated by the royal couple, according to royal watcher Victoria Mather. She said movie stars will be "dying to see them, because they are the new kids on the block."

William and Catherine -- commonly referred to as Kate -- will attend what is expected to be a star-studded gala this weekend at a Los Angeles theater, honoring the British film industry.

Natalie Thomas, of US Weekly, said, "Jennifer Lopez and Marc Anthony will be there, and potentially sitting with William and Kate at the same table; we've heard that Nicole Kidman and Tom Hanks will be there."

On Saturday, William will saddle up for a charity polo match in Santa Barbara. Those playing with him will have to pony up $100,000.

But it's not all glitz and glam: The royals will meet with entrepreneurs at the Beverly Hilton and visit an inner-city arts program on Los Angeles' Skid Row.

Tracy reported the royal couple will be staying at the British consul's residence. Neighbors in the area have turned down offers from the paparazzi to use their lawns for a good view.

Sgt. Mitzi Fierro, of the Los Angeles Police Department, said, "If (intruders) attempt to gain further access in any prohibited areas, they will be arrested."

The couple's California visit comes after a week-long tour of Canada.

There, the newlyweds put on quite a show. The two went canoeing, and William landed a sea helicopter for the first time. He even publicly practiced his French, which he says needs some work.

Roya Nikkhah, a royals reporter for The Telegraph, said, "Canada was much more about links with the monarchy, and California is much more about raising the profile of British industry, charities and his own charities."

But the stakes will be higher in Hollywood. William hasn't been in the U.S. since 2004, and this is Catherine's first visit ever.

But she's taking a no-fuss approach. She has no stylist and an entourage of just seven -- small by royal standards.

Mather said, "She is only taking one outfit per day unless she's doing something in the evening. Oh my God, oh! But she has a secret weapon: She has a hairdresser."
