What To Do About The Price Of Gas

This column was written by CBS News Early Show co-anchor Harry Smith.

The price of a gallon of gasoline is pushing past three bucks a gallon and our friends in Washington know an issue when one lands in their laps.

Have your heard some of the proposals? Some lawmakers think every American should get a check for a hundred bucks to help them buy gas. Now that's letting free markets do their thing. And, oh, by the way, a friend of mine filled her SUV the other day in Connecticut. The cost: One hundred bucks.

I remember when they used to give you free stuff at the gas station. Now it feels like you've been robbed.

Somebody said bring back the windfall profits tax. Yeah, that was a real success. The president wants authority to raise the gas mileage standards on passenger cars. Hello!? They haven't been changed since 1985.

But here is some heartening news — it could be worse. In London, gas is more than seven bucks a gallon.
